BOTANICAL GARDENS DEVELOPMENT

The Parkland Development journey commenced in July 2016 to convert the 4.2ha Railway reserve from its previous uses including, an Engine sheds & coal store, Pig & Calf sales and holding yards for stock.  WDRC engaged landscape architect to complete concept design, with Brandon & Associates engaged as the Project Managers.  With the first sod turned in June 2018, the project was completed in May 2019.

With the design including a watermelon themed state of the art water feature, water supply was critical for the gardens to be a success, while supply of water in drought conditions was controversial.  Non-potable supply was sourced from the Charley's Creek original WTP and re-use of the decommissioned rising main to save new infrastructure helped save the day. Celebrating historical elements of the site (ancient megafauna, indigenous culture and Qld Rail depot), the new regional botanic garden showcases the region’s rich variety of endemic flora.

Retaining the significant mature habitat trees, new plantings included local native plants based of those endemic to the Condamine catchment area.  Indigenous heritage was incorporated with scarred trees on site incorporated in a dedicated Indigenous Cultural Area.

The procurement focus was to deliver cost-effective project with local suppliers / expenditure and was divided into 6 separate packages, resulting in 6 separate contractors & suppliers and a 70% local spend.

Through Brandon & Associates oversight, design skills and management, the multi-award-winning project is now home to numerous local events enjoyed by the Chinchilla community.
