WARRI GATE ROAD

WARRI GATE ROAD SURVEY AND DESIGN

This project forms Stage 1 of a strategic multi-stage upgrade of Warri Gate Road, transforming a key regional transport route from an unsealed road to a sealed all-weather corridor between Noccundra Waterhole and the New South Wales border. Once completed, the route will provide a more direct inland freight connection between Broken Hill in western New South Wales and Hughenden in north-west Queensland, improving transport efficiency, reliability, and accessibility for heavy vehicle operators and regional communities. Stage 1 comprised the detailed design of approximately 25 kilometres of roadway across two separate sections, laying the foundation for future upgrades along the corridor.

Brandon & Associates delivered a comprehensive range of engineering services including drone-based engineering survey, geotechnical investigations, pavement and surfacing design, roadworks and drainage design, and project management during construction. The use of drone technology enabled the efficient capture of detailed survey data across remote and challenging terrain, while targeted geotechnical investigations informed pavement design and earthworks requirements. The design process included refinement of both horizontal and vertical road geometry to achieve the required design speeds while responding to local site constraints and environmental conditions.

A key focus of the project was developing a resilient and cost-effective road design capable of performing under the region's unique climatic and hydrological conditions. Detailed assessments of flood ways, catchment hydrology, culvert requirements, and pavement performance were undertaken to improve long-term reliability and reduce maintenance demands. The final design package included construction documentation, specifications, bills of quantities, and cost estimates, providing Council with a robust and deliverable solution that progresses a significant piece of regional transport infrastructure and supports future economic growth across western Queensland.
