GIRRAWHEEN FIELD COMPRESSION STATION

This project involved the investigation, design, and documentation of the proposed Girrawheen Field Compression Station Access Track, supporting the development of key energy infrastructure north of Miles. Located on Arrow Energy-owned land, the access corridor provides critical connectivity between Retreat Road and the proposed field compression station, while also servicing future infrastructure including a solar farm, logistics hub, laydown area, water treatment plant, and power station. The design encompassed approximately 4.8 kilometres of access road traversing rural terrain and accommodating the operational requirements of heavy vehicle traffic.


Brandon & Associates delivered the detailed engineering design of a modified Class B unsealed access road, including road geometry, floodway crossings, culvert infrastructure, and pavement treatments. The alignment followed an existing formed gravel track where practical, with refinements to improve safety, functionality, and long-term performance. The project incorporated four flood ways and seven culvert crossings, requiring detailed consideration of site hydrology, drainage performance, and maintenance requirements to ensure reliable all-weather access to the facility.


Given the expected use by large heavy vehicles, targeted strategic sealing treatments were incorporated into the design to enhance durability and safety. Both major horizontal curves were sealed to minimise pavement degradation caused by turning movements, while a steep grade section associated with a culvert crossing was sealed to improve traction and operational reliability. The resulting design provides a robust and efficient access solution that supports the construction and operation of major energy infrastructure while ensuring safe and reliable access under a range of operating conditions.
