BUNDI ROAD BRIDGE - WANDOAN CREEK

This project for Western Downs Regional Council delivered the detailed civil and structural design of new bridge infrastructure on Bundi Road near Wandoan, improving connectivity and resilience across both Wandoan Creek and Horse Creek. The works included the design of two-lane, 21 metre span precast concrete bridges with 8 metre carriageways, incorporating precast driven octagonal piles, cast in-situ reinforced concrete headstocks, and precast prestressed post-tensioned concrete deck units. The engagement also involved the coordination and management of specialist subcontractors undertaking cultural heritage, geotechnical and hydrological investigations.

A key challenge of the project was the inability to obtain geotechnical information at the central pier location within Wandoan Creek due to water access constraints. Through innovative engineering analysis, survey data and subsurface profiles from each bank were used to model the weathered rock profile across the creek, enabling the optimisation of pile design and foundation depths. Additional pile length allowances were incorporated into the tender documentation to manage construction risk and provide confidence in the final design solution.

Beyond design, the project team also fulfilled the role of Superintendent during construction, overseeing the delivery of the bridge structures and associated approach roadworks. The successful completion of these works has enhanced the safety, reliability and flood resilience of the local transport network, providing Western Downs Regional Council with durable infrastructure designed to serve the region for decades to come.
