STANTHORPE CYCLEWAY

NEW SHARED CYCLEWAY

Brandon & Associates designed and documented the shared concrete path including the technical design aspects with Transport Mains Roads (TMR) for the local road crossings under the new TMR funding model.

The project involved a new shared cycleway in Stanthorpe generally following Quart Pot Creek, that bisects Stanthorpe. At first glance, it looked like a simple footpath project, but the intricacies highlighted multiple factors to be considered.

The project involved a 3.0m wide shared path @ 1.5km in length crossing 3x local roads, 1x TMR controlled road and connecting to 3x existing bridges. It replaced an aging path asset of Council and required design input to retrofit the pathway design to existing built features, while endeavouring to achieve the tight vertical and horizontal geometric requirements of the new Austroads standards and guidelines in a constrained corridor.

The project also involved assessment of pedestrian demand, assessment of existing pedestrian refuge crossing suitability based on physical built assets and speed environment parameters, and assessment of alternate pedestrian crossing options at local roads based on Benefit Cost Radio inputs and calculations using Austroads assessment tools and guidelines.
